What is Shropshire like to live in?

A picturesque county in the west midlands, Shropshire has a lot of beautiful countryside and many historical towns to explore. It’s a rural location, however its towns and market towns are bustling and have amenities aplenty. The River Severn, Great Britain's longest river, runs through Shropshire, meaning waterside properties are available and you’ll find unique homes across the county.

Shropshire’s skyline is dominated by the Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Many of its town and villages have Tudor-fronted houses and stone cottages lining narrow streets. Traditional pubs and museums celebrating the culture and history of the county will fill your weekends, not to mention exploring all that great outdoors.

Getting around is easy too. Virgin Trains runs a direct service between Shrewsbury and London Euston with a journey time of two hours and 30 minutes and the Cambrian Line links the county town with mid-Wales. Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester airports are all about an hour’s drive away. The A5 and M54 run between Wolverhampton to Telford. The A5 then veers north to Oswestry. The A49 serves as the main artery through south Shropshire, running between Shrewsbury and Herefordshire. You can also easily access the A49, A53 and A41.

Telford

‘The birthplace of industry’, Telford is among the more modern places in Shropshire. Modern estates are popping up all over, meaning excellent family homes and apartments for couples or singles. A large shopping centre, ice rink, theatres, and cinemas mean entertainment is easy to find. On Telford's southern boundaries is the Ironbridge Gorge, a scenic tourist destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury attracts those looking for a modern town steeped in history. You’re close to Wales here and the town centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings. Georgian townhouses with walled gardens line roads such as St John’s Hill and Abbey Foregate, perfect for families.

Ludlow

Ludlow has a charming mix of listed property as well as its very own castle. Search areas such as Lower Raven Lane and Pepper Lane for cottages with exposed oak beams. Near to The Wrekin (a large hill) is Wellington, which has attractive family homes and plenty of affordable options for couples or singles, including 1920s buildings split into fetching apartments.

Market Drayton

Close to Cheshire and Staffordshire, this eclectic town has narrow streets and alleyways, home to antiques, craft shops, inns, tea shops, and traditional grocers, butchers, and bakers. Properties here are often steeped in history, however newer developments are opening up on the outskirts of town for spacious family homes and modern apartments.
