In terms of transport, East Sussex is served entirely by A roads, but the M20, M23, M25 and M26 are all within easy reach, offering connections with London and the rest of the country. Trains run regularly from Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings direct to London. It takes about an hour to two depending on your starting point, but Brighton is especially popular with London commuters. For travel with a vintage twist, East Sussex is home to the Bluebell Railway, where you can take a classic steam train ride through the countryside.
East Sussex’s property hotspots
Coastal cities Brighton and Hove, the historic towns of Lewes and Rye, and the picturesque village of Ditchling are just some hotspots in East Sussex. Brighton is known for its Regency-era properties, which offer opportunity for renters as many are split into flats or smaller properties. It’s a little less affordable here for terrace or semi-detached homes.
Modern homes with sea views can be found in Eastbourne, especially at Sovereign Harbour. For the newest flats and penthouses, this is where many head, because you also benefit from waterside shopping and restaurants. St Leonards-on-Sea and the Old Town in Hastings are sought-after for the views and history behind them. Property values are a little more affordable here, too.
A little inland from the coast, Rye offers medieval homes and independent shops along cobbled streets, as well as a boutique cinema and excellent coffee shops. And for the best of the beaches, nearby Camber Sands is simply stunning.
Lewes is a popular historic market town just an hour-long train journey from London. Lewes offers good schools and excellent access to those East Sussex landscapes, as it sits within the South Downs National Park, only 10 miles from the coast.
