What is it like to live in Surrey?
Surrey offers a great quality of life whether you are renting or buying property in the area. Crime rates are typically low and there are some wonderful schools, including popular independent schools Charterhouse and Tormead which have both previously achieved outstanding Ofsted status. Surrey is in close enough to the capital for commuting options, with good rail connections serviced by South West Trains, Anglia Railways, and South Central.
The Thames Trains line runs from Reading to Gatwick. Surrey University in Guildford means this area in particular is good for renting or leasing property. Both modern and period properties can be found within major cities and the smaller, picturesque villages. It is important to note that in terms of international travel, Surrey is close to both Gatwick and Heathrow Airport.
Surrey’s property hotspots
Surrey’s large towns such as Guildford, Woking and Farnham offer excellent properties in a variety of sizes and more than enough job opportunities, but many choose to settle in one of the county’s ‘chocolate box’ villages for access to some gorgeous English countryside just beyond their back garden.
Mickleham in Surrey’s Mole Valley offers delightful period properties, attractive woodland views, and short walks to friendly pubs. Or try Ripley with its award-winning farmers’ market and cosy coffee shops. It’s hard to believe this location is within a 40-minute drive to London’s West End.
Explore some of the areas hidden gems like the Silent Pool in Albury for some peace and quiet. This spring-fed lake just a few miles south of Guildford is perfect for outdoor swimming or picnicking and birdwatching. The lesser-known canal system of Surrey is also well worth a visit if you are planning to move to the county. Box Hill is the oldest untouched wood in the UK and offers fantastic views over Surrey, as well as opportunities to see local wildlife. It is popular with cyclists and walking groups.
