We know Medway
Medway is home to the historic Chatham Dockyard and Rochester Castle. It has a number of Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) such as Lodge Hill and the Medway estuary and marshes, and is only a short 38 minute train journey to central London, for those that want the city buzz.
With a population in excess of 270,000, Medway is well served with 97 schools, to cater for the family friendly area. There are also a number of marinas, yacht clubs and sailing clubs to keep the community entertained.
The Medway towns are Rochester, Gillingham, Chatham, Strood and Rainham. The A2 runs through the towns along the site of the old Dover to London Roman road, which locals call ‘the top road’.
Rochester and the Medway area are steeped in maritime history. Rochester itself was a favourite of Victorian novelist, Charles Dickens, who based many of his novels in the area. There are cobbled streets, historic buildings and an ancient cathedral and castle. But trendy boutiques, cafes and galleries are the norm here too.
Henry VIII decided that his naval ships would spend the winter moored in the River Medway, which led to the formation of HM Dockyard, Chatham. Now Chatham Historic Dockyard, it’s offers a wealth of attractions, with children’s activities, a gallery, restaurants and cafes and various festivals.
